From estimate to decision

Make sense of your potential return

A useful estimate starts with realistic inputs and a clear view of the costs.

Explore different online ordering scenarios

Start with your current revenue and gross margin. Adjust online adoption, projected sales growth and order automation to see how each assumption affects your estimate.

Try this Compare monthly, quarterly or annual results. Set sales growth to zero to explore the effect of automation alone.

Compare ecommerce costs with potential savings

Your estimate includes SteelVend’s subscription and transaction fees. Include or exclude potential labor savings to see how they affect the projected profit.

Keep in mind Time freed up is not automatically a cash saving. Account for how your team would use that capacity, plus any setup or integration costs in your wider business case.

Results are estimates, not guaranteed returns. Replace the default assumptions with figures that reflect your business.

Calculator assumptions

The starting values are editable planning inputs, not industry benchmarks. Revenue moved online and additional revenue are separate inputs: moving an existing order into the portal does not count as growth.

Revenue and gross margin
The defaults are $15,000,000 in annual revenue, a 20% gross margin, and 1.89% projected revenue growth. The same gross margin applies to existing and additional sales. VAP or pricing improvements are not modeled separately.
Online adoption and software costs
By default, 50% of total revenue is online, including the same share of additional sales. The model deducts the 1% transaction fee on all portal revenue and the selected subscription: $1,000/month for Starter or $1,500/month for Business.
Potential sales labor savings
The defaults assume 50% of online orders can be automated and $100.53 in revenue per $1 of sales labor. The model uses the online share and automation rate to estimate the share of sales labor saved. It does not measure time saved per order. Exclude savings when freed time will be used for selling rather than reducing spending.
What the profit estimate includes
The calculator starts with gross profit, deducts recurring software costs, and adds potential labor savings when selected. With labor savings included, the result blends gross profit with an operating expense benefit. It excludes one-time setup, integration, and other incremental overhead; account for these separately when planning your return.

The homepage shipment example

The homepage models a service center shipping 80 short tons per day over 250 shipping days, at $2,300 per ton. A 10% increase adds 8 tons per day and $4,600,000 in annual revenue. At a 20% gross margin, that adds $920,000 in gross profit and leaves $649,000 after recurring SteelVend costs. Prices, product mix, and margin stay unchanged; no labor savings or added overhead are modeled.

Research behind the scenario

Reliance’s 2025 Form 10-K reports 6,388,100 tons sold and approximately 310 locations. Dividing those figures by a modeled 250-day shipping year gives about 82 tons per location per day.

Ryerson’s 2025 earnings release reports 1,947,000 tons shipped, 252 shipping days, and a $2,348 average selling price per ton. Its 2025 annual report lists 103 North American facilities and three in China. Dividing company shipments by all 106 reported facilities gives about 73 tons per facility per day. Facility counts include administrative and specialized sites, so this is only a rough scale comparison.

These disclosures inform the rounded 80-ton working baseline, 250-day year, and $2,300 selling price. They are public-company network comparisons, not a measured average for independent service centers. The 20% margin and 50% online adoption are scenario inputs.

McKinsey’s distribution research reports 5–15% revenue growth among companies implementing omnichannel transformations. That provides broader context for the 10% scenario; it does not establish a SteelVend growth rate or a steel-specific tonnage increase. The example assumes growth comes from additional volume and that fulfillment capacity is available.

To reproduce it in the calculator, enter $46,000,000 in annual revenue, 20% margin, 50% online adoption, and 10% growth; choose Business and exclude labor savings. One-time setup and integration costs are outside the example.
